BIG Broadband and Gigabit-to-the-Home
This 2006-era slide set supports a vision of universal adoption of truly high-speed Internet access - BIG Broadband - and the challenges of deploying the required infrastructure. It starts with arguments that even 100 Mbps is not enough and then introduces FTTH concepts and the debate over public versus private ownership. It concludes by describing a residential gateway device to terminate fiber service.
No single technology is best in all cases, and each community is different - with different objectives, application needs, challenges, and business models. Municipalities with no competitive broadband offerings have already started installing wireless networks of their own, and that tactical step can complement fiber optics as strategic infrastructure. These charts and application examples are designed to prompt such strategic thinking.
